Chapter 11

Satin was acutely aware of the violence that sizzled in the air. Not just from Zephyr, who hungered for the death of her enemy, but from Marco, who was preparing to protect her. Even if it meant destroying the best means they had of discovering what was infecting her and how to get rid of it.

She had to act quickly to prevent disaster.

“The beginning of what?” Zephyr demanded, her expression suspicious.

Satin considered her answer. She’d been shocked when the elemental had revealed her parents had been killed in Siberia. It wasn’t that she didn’t think a violent demon hiding from the netherworld wouldn’t choose such a remote, ruggedly brutal location. It was the perfect spot. But because that had been her homeland for centuries.

There had to be a connection.

Didn’t there?

Still, she didn’t want to give away everything to Zephyr. The female was eager to destroy the ifrit. Even if it meant obliterating Satin in the process. She needed to persuade the female to let her deal with the evil spirit. And the only way to do that was to convince her that she had some sort of plan.

“The beginning of when it was possible that I crossed paths with Elwha,” Satin at last confessed. “Can you open a portal to Siberia?”

The female sucked in a sharp breath, her hair floating on an unseen wind. “Crossed paths with him? You claimed you didn’t know the creature.”

“I don’t. But I did spend several centuries in the area.” Satin pretended she didn’t notice the lightning flashing in the female’s eyes or the scent of lavender that drenched the air. “If he left behind a portion of his residue before he was banished, it might have infected me.”

Zephyr frowned. She didn’t appear to be mollified by Satin’s explanation, but she was no longer on the verge of releasing her enormous powers. Satin was going to take that as a temporary win.

“Even if that’s true, how will it help to travel back there?”

An excellent question. One that was gnawing at the back of her mind. She couldn’t explain the vague premonition that was driving her to return.

“There have to be demons in the area who will remember him,” Satin smoothly offered the only excuse that might satisfy the elemental. “Some might even have interacted with the creature. Any information we can gather will help to defeat it.”

“Or more likely, you desire to escape so you can continue to spread your evil,” Zephyr countered, abruptly moving forward to brush her fingers down Satin’s cheek. “There.”

Marco growled, but before he could attack, Satin gave a sharp shake of her head. As satisfying as it would be to punish the elemental for putting her hands on her, she didn’t dare. Not only couldn’t she risk a potential injury when they were at the mercy of this female, but she needed a way to travel to Siberia. Immediately.

She reached up to touch her cheek. “What did you do?”

“A simple tracing spell.” Zephyr floated backward. Not out of fear, but as if she’d finished her business.
